The Revd Nick Helm is the Bishop of Sheffield’s Advisor in Spirituality.

After 10 years in Inner-city parish ministry in London and Sheffield, he has been Bishop’s Advisor since January 1999.

I seek to offer support and encouragement for Clergy, parishes and individuals in pursuing their spiritual journeys. Spirituality is our resourcing for living out our faith and so is as essential to living faith as eating and drinking is to living.

This journeying needs support and encouragement - places where we can explore and find we are listened to, encouraged and offered suggestions for continuing our life journeys in our prayer and action.

I find a major part of my work is in relation to Spiritual Direction or Companioning - sometimes known as Soul Friendship. I act as a point of contact for those seeking a Spiritual Companion, being able to refer people to a wide range of people who offer this. I along with Adrian Scott and Angela Brown run the courses on Spiritual Growth and Discipleship and on Spiritual Accompaniment. I also provide Spiritual Accompaniment to a number of people.

In addition I organise and conduct retreats and quiet days at Whirlow Grange and elsewhere.

I am happy to respond to requests from individuals, clergy and churches for events and activities that may enable spiritual growth.

I am involved in a group called Inspir Sheffield who, drawing upon the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola provide opportunities for exploring these in Ignatian Evenings, Weeks of Accompanied Prayer and Spiritual Companioning.

I am a team member of the Llysfasi Spirituality Workshop, an annual residential workshop for those seeking to grow in companioning others on their spiritual journey. Again this is based upon the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises.

My work is supported by the Spirituality Advisory Team

I recently co-edited a Grove Booklet with Philip Allin called ‘Finding Support in Ministry’. This explores a range of ways in which those in ministry can find appropriate support.

Nick’s interests and hobbies, include rock-climbing, computing and the music of Van Morrison.
