Spirituality fans the spark in the soul.

Soul Spark:

The image of the Spark of the Soul comes from Meister Eckhart, 14th Century German Priest and theologian whose sermons and writings on spirituality provide profound wisdom and help for Christians today.

Letting the Spark in the Soul be fanned by the Spirit of God so that the spark becomes a flame and a burning fire of love within, empowering faithful response in life, through mission and ministry gives a wonderful image of what real spirituality is all about.

Spirituality:

Just because spirituality has become trendy today, does not mean it is not important. Spirituality is something that has always been important to human beings. The growth in interest in recent years is a reflection of the lack of priority attached to it through recent centuries - perhaps particularly since the enlightenment - when knowledge and its acquisition took over from spirituality as the means to personal development. The pendulum is swinging back - an important corrective.

What is spirituality? One way of defining it is as to do with the question ‘Who am I?’ Who am I in relation to God, myself, the rest of creation - and how do I work this out. Thus spirituality is to do with all of life, what we do, how we understand ourselves, how we understand life, and what motivates, guides and resources us to be more truly human, more truly the person we were born to become.

Revd Nick Helm

These pages are provided by the Bishop of Sheffield’s Advisor in Spirituality, the Revd Nick Helm. Nick works primarily to promote exploring spirituality in the Diocese of Sheffield. However he seeks to work ecumenically and collaboratively in every way possible.

There are three major streams to this work

  1. Spiritual Direction / Spiritual Companionship - helping people find spiritual companions, training people in developing as a spiritual companion, supporting those offering spiritual companionship to others

  2. Promoting Spirituality through courses, talks, events etc.

  3. Developing a programme of retreats, quiet days and other events that give opportunities for people to give more attention to their spirituality.

If you are interested in exploring spirituality then you may find something of interest on these pages.

Some resources are specific to those in the Sheffield Diocese, some to anyone who is interested.

These resources are offered without restriction, though please acknowledge the source.
